 Amanda Westermier
June 17, 1988 - April 25, 2003.
The Accident
On April 19, 2003, Mandy was competing in a Heart of Oklahoma Youth Rodeo (HOYRA) in Harrah Oklahoma when she was fatally injured. Mandy had just finished her barrel pattern and had left the arena to go back to the horse trailer. When the next competitor finished her barrel pattern she lost control of her horse and could not get the horse to stop. The rider and horse left the arena and continued toward the parking lot when they collided with Mandy and her horse Star. Mandy was thrown to the ground and suffered traumatic head injuries. Mandy was immediately flown to OU Medical Trauma Center by Medi-Flight and immediately underwent surgery to try to relieve pressure caused from swelling on her brain. A second surgery was also performed with no success. Mandy was in the hospital for six days. On April 25, 2003 a profusion scan was performed and we were informed that brain death had occurred.
Organ donation After Mandy was pronounced and brain death had occurred the family was faced with one of the most difficult decisions a parent could ever have to make. The choice was either to internalize the incident going quietly home in sorrow or to try to have a positive impact on the lives of others. There is no right or wrong answer given this situation and what ever decision is made by a family is right. Organ donation may or may not be a good decision for every family in this situation but it seemed to be right for us. It was decided that since Mandy was such a giving and caring person she would have wanted to help as many people as possible. Mandy was able to help six people through organ donation as well as countless others through bone and tissue donation. We have been blessed to meet all of the organ recipients and continue to stay in contact with these wonderful people.
A&E network produced a nationally televised special on organ donation and Amanda life. Included are some videos from this special.
Our family was also with Governor Brad Henry when he signed the organ donation bill in 2003.
